Beauty Meets DNA
Makeup and skincare are built on science - not just chemistry, but biology too. Your genes also play a huge role in how your skin responds to what’s inside your products. Let’s break it down.
Your Genes, Your Choices
What exactly are genes? Genes are segments of DNA that contain instructions for producing proteins - the molecules in your body that drive specific traits or processes, like oil or collagen production. Gene expression is your body deciding when and where to follow those instructions.
Think of it this way: Your genes are your full makeup collection; gene expression is the routine you choose each day based on your plans, mood, or how your skin feels.
From Lab to Label
Traditionally, products have been formulated for the “average” person. Gene expression data and genetic insights are paving the way toward more personalized beauty products.
Biotech researchers and cosmetic scientists can now study how ingredients influence skin-related genes by seeing which genes turn on or off when a specific ingredient is applied. They can also see which ingredient components affect certain genes, then use biotechnology to make formula-ready ingredients that target those specific skin concerns.
This type of research can inform cosmetic claims. In lab studies, collagen peptides have been shown to increase expression of collagen-related genes - the ones that help support skin structure and strength. On a product label, this might translate to a marketing claim like: "Boosts collagen levels for firmer, tighter skin.”
Check the Fine Print!
Gene expression research is helping unlock the next generation of personalized products. But just because a product or ingredient has evidence of changing gene expression, doesn’t mean you’ll see results. A product might show lab results of turning on or off a gene, without producing visible or measurable skin improvements.
That’s why we pair gene expression data with independent, dermatologist-led clinical testing. At BiotechBeauty®, we back all claims with quantified clinical evidence, so you know our products actually work - both in the lab and on your skin.

Your skincare routine should be as unique as your DNA!
