If you have sensitive skin, you have probably been told to search for the “non-comedogenic” label on products. This buzzword has grown in popularity in skincare and makeup recently, so let’s break down what it means.
Pore Priority
Non-comodegenic refers to products that will not clog your pores. Acne is caused from a buildup of excess oil, bacteria, and dead cells which then lead to clogged pores.
So are non-comedogenic products the solution to all your pimple problems? Not exactly.
The No-Rules Rule
-
There are no official regulations from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the term “non-comedogenic”
-
Tests are not standardized across beauty brands so there is not just one method in how brands are determining if a product is non-comedogenic
-
Some products might still contain comedogenic ingredients in small amounts, or have a formulation that clogs pores even if individual ingredients don’t.
-
BOTTOM LINE: while the label is helpful, it’s not a guarantee.
Pore-Safe Picks
-
Always check a product’s ingredients and clinical testing.
-
Look for formulas tested on humans (not just in labs or on animals).
-
Check it contains non-clogging ingredients like salyclic acid, glycerin, and Vitamin C
-
Use this ingredient checker to find out which ingredients are non-comodegenic.
